What are HR Analytics?
HR Analytics (HRA) can be defined as the application of statistical methodologies and data science algorithms to analyze data related to a company’s workforce.
This approach makes it possible to extract valuable information and support strategic decisions related to human capital management in companies.
HR Analytics use quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources, such as HR processes, personnel master databases, surveys, assessments, performance data, and many others including external sources.
Why are they important and what are the benefits for companies?
HR Analytics are important for several reasons, including:
- Improved Decision Making: they provide data-driven information that helps managers make more informed and objective decisions about personnel management.
- Operational Efficiency: they help identify inefficient processes and optimize resources, improving productivity and reducing costs.
- Talent Attraction, Development and Retention: by analyzing data on employee satisfaction and turnover, companies can implement effective strategies to retain talent.
- Strategic planning: They support workforce planning and development of skills needed for the future, aligning human resources with business goals.
- Corporate culture improvement: They provide insights into employee engagement and well-being levels, enabling improvements in the work environment.
How the HR Analytics process works
The HR Analytics process typically involves several steps:
- Data collection: data are collected from various sources, such as human resource management systems (HRMS), surveys, feedback, performance reviews, and social media.
- Cleaning and preprocessing: collected data are cleaned and prepared for analysis, eliminating errors and inconsistencies.
- Exploratory analysis: data are explored to identify patterns and trends using basic statistical techniques and data visualization.
- Predictive modeling: machine learning algorithms and statistical models are applied to predict future events, such as employee turnover or training needs.
- Interpretation and implementation: analysis results are interpreted and translated into concrete actions to improve human resource management.
HR Analytics: 3 examples of use
One of the most effective ways to use HRAs is to ask “powerful” questions that help us focus on a specific problem (see Figure 1).

Whether it is understanding what is happening in a specific department or comparing different time series, the right questions guide data collection and analysis, preventing these activities from becoming overly scattered and ineffective.
Three fundamental principles of HRAs
Then there are three fundamental aspects of HRAs that should be kept in mind for HR management and all HR activities (see Figure 2):
- a purely “technical” analysis is of little use, as an understanding of the context in which we are doing our analysis is essential;
- in order to ask powerful questions of ourselves, as well as to interpret the information that emerges from the analyses, it is important to incardinate other points of view as well;
- today it is imperative for all HR personnel to have an understanding of the main data analytics technologies and techniques in order to be able to use them or even just understand the results in order to interpret them correctly.
Practical examples of the application of HR Analytics to HR processes.
HR Analytics can be applied in different areas of HR management: for example, they can help us understand a phenomenon or analyze a specific HR process. Let’s look at some examples in this regard (see Figure 3 and Figure 4).
HR Analytics: a key tool for the human resources department
HR Analytics are a key resource for the human resources department and are essential to support the growth and success of the organization. Organizations that have a dedicated organizational structure and use HRAs extensively to readily bring relevant information to the right decision-making levels have a key competitive advantage over others.
